As of January 1, 2021, the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) became the national standard for law enforcement crime data reporting in the United States. The NIBRS protocol outline that offenses be categorized into 3 groups; Person, Property, and Society.
Crimes against Person are crimes such as murder, rape, and assault. These crimes involve individual victims.
Crimes against Property are crimes such as robbery and burglary. The objective of these crimes are to obtain money, property, or other benefits.
Crimes against Society are crimes including gambling, prostitution, and drug violations. These crimes involve activities that society prohibits.
